Aerotonomy is developing several technologies related to flow control for small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and micro air vehicles (MAVs). These technologies include active flow control systems based on both zero-net-mass-flux “synthetic” jet actuators, as well as steady and pulsed blowing pneumatic circulation control. Moreover, through an innovative application of synthetic jet actuator technology, Aerotonomy has demonstrated generation of flight control forces and moments at both high and low angles of attack using synthetic jets. Research being conducted by Aerotonomy in this field includes investigation of the time-dependent flow-field effects of synthetic jets on overall circulation, boundary layer control, force and moment augmentation at low Reynolds numbers, using both advanced CFD modeling and experimental investigations. Aerotonomy is also developing advanced closed loop flight control systems using flow control devices as the primary actuators which are being proven in both wind tunnel and flight test environments. In addition, the company is investigating the application of these technologies to provide Extreme Short Takeoff and Landing (ESTOL) capabilities. The results of these ongoing research and development efforts are being used to develop a range of products and services including high bandwidth flow control actuation systems and active flow control system design tools and systems integration services.
